Carosesa: a delicious new carob and sesame fusion
Food and travel author and broadcaster Yasemen Kaner-White has a mixed English-Cypriot heritage. When living in Cyprus she’d often dip bread into a mixture of the finest carob – known as the ‘black gold’ of Cyprus – with tahini, for a tasty energy-fuelled, plant-based snack.
When looking for the equivalent in British shops, she found that there was no such thing. The so-called ‘healthy’ alternatives she discovered, with a long list of unnecessary ingredients, spurred her on to develop Carosesa. Made simply from premium, fully traceable carob and sesame, Carosesa is cold-stirred to retain the calcium, iron and protein-rich nutrients.
You can spread the delicious treat on toast, crackers and pancakes; add a spoonful to your smoothie for a natural hit of iron and calcium; use as an ingredient in baking; dollop onto yogurt, ice-cream or porridge; serve as savoury on a cheese board. Versatile, vegan and gluten-free, the possibilities are endless…
Being experimental in the kitchen, Yasemen has created recipes, along with those of top chefs, showing the versatility of Carosesa in both savoury and sweet dishes. Examples are on Carosesa’s website, carosesa.com.
Sharing her heritage and respecting her family recipe, Yasemen is proud that her sustainable product incurs no food wastage. The entire sesame seed is used and once the molasses are extracted, the leftover pods are given as animal feed or made into compost, giving back to the rich earth they came from.
Postage and packing is free for readers of Black + Green ordering Carosesa from carosesa.com, if they include the special code FRIEND.
