Most Indian restaurants dish out almost identikit menus, with the same old kormas, masalas, rogan josh’s and the like. Not so Ganapati, which opened in 2004. Specialising in South Indian cuisine, it’s and unpretentious hidden gem off the main drag and nestled amongst residential streets, with everything made imaginatively with wholesome, fresh ingredients.
Highlights of the menu include the mildly spiced beetroot dosa (£5.50), its deep purple based flecked with bright green leek and broccoli and red chilli. It’s delicious, and the scrumptious flaky, buttery paratha is an absolute must.
Other options include vegetarian street snacks (£5.50), consisting of two deep-fried potato balls and a pair of nutty, chickpea patties with ginger, curry leaf and green chilli.
The Kerala Fish Mollee (£14.00) contains tender sea bass fillets cooked in a mild curry sauce of ground coconut and spices, with tinges of lemon, chilli and ginger, making it all the more yummy.
The selection of desserts includes sorbets (£5.50) and ice creams (£6) made in-house: the rich banana and date ice cream is to be recommended.
